Deputy Minister of Energy & Minerals loses Sh23m valuables in hotel theft

Morogoro. Various items valued at over Sh23 million were yesterday stolen from the hotel room of Energy and Minerals deputy minister Adam Malima in Morogoro.

Mr Malima had checked into Nashera Hotel the previous day after completing a two-day tour of Morogoro Region.
Acting Morogoro Regional Police Commander Hamisi Suleiman said the theft took place at around 4.45am after the window of Mr Malima’s room was broken.  However, it was not immediately established whether the deputy minister was in the room at that time.

Items stolen included three laptops, three expensive mobile phones, two diamond rings, two bank debit cards, three bags containing clothes, government documents and $4,000 and Sh1.5 million cash, all valued at Sh23.3 million.

Mr Suleiman said two firearms belonging to Mr Malima that were also in the room were not stolen, adding that police were questioning three security guards who were on duty when the theft took place. He said there were footprints leading towards and away from the window.

“Investigators have found footprints near the window.  Whoever carried out the burglary did not have any shoes on for obvious reasons,” Mr Suleiman said, adding that police had arrested for questioning three guards who were on duty when Mr Malima’s room was broken into.

Police and the hotel’s security officer studied CCTV footage recorded at the time the theft is said to have taken place.
“The footage shows a car parked on the other side of the road, but we haven’t been able to establish what type of car it is…we’re still investigating,” Mr Suleiman said.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner Joel Bendera, Regional Administrative Secretary Mgeni Baruani and several security officers visited the hotel yesterday.

Journalists were prevented from seeing Mr Malima on the grounds that he was meeting with regional administration officials.

Mr Bendera said he was at the hotel to console Mr Malima.  “We are here to console the deputy minister.  I cannot be his spokesperson…he’s the one who’s supposed to talk about what has happened.  You can also talk to the hotel’s manager,” Mr Bendera said.

The manager, Mr Yustini Mtua, confirmed the theft, but said police had prevented him from speaking about the incident because investigations were still going on.

“It’s true something happened here this morning.  I’m not in a position to can’t give you the details…come later and I’ll tell you everything,” he said.
